Everyone Wants to Learn How to Windmill!

It's hilarious, really. Anytime I've ever busted windmills in front of people they all want to learn how to do them! I used to try and teach everyone that wanted to learn how to windmill, but it was hopeless. Most people didn't want to put the time in, so I got more selective. I began putting together a small list of criteria that would be needed to learn how to do windmills. These were just two small measures to make sure the person would waste my time or theirs.

Eveready's "Learn How to Windmill" Criteria

I know, these two things will probably seem silly, but they have helped me avoid a lot of flaky people that seem hell bent on wasting precious time!

  1. Need to Be Athletic - For starters, I only try to teach windmills to people that are already fairly athletic.   Why?   Well, people that are athletic already have some of the strength and agility needed to perform windmills.   Also, I'm not a personal trainer and I don't feel like getting someone into shape before I can even get started teaching them how to windmill!
  2. Need to be Willing to Put the Time In - If you can put aside 15-45 mins a day you will be doing windmills in 6 months to a year.   Some people will do this a lot faster and some slower - but 6 months to a year is about the average!   If you consistently make the time for it you will learn how to windmill.

3 Things to Help You Learn How to Windmill Faster!

There are 3 things I recommend to everyone when they are learning how to windmill:

  1. Do Push-ups! - You need some upper body strength to do windmills, you don't need to be Superman, but you still need enough to push off.
  2. Get Stronger Abs - Core strength is a corner stone of this movement. Being able to keep your body rigid will allow you to create more speed. Faster windmills look amazing! Sit-ups, crunches, leg raises - it doesn't really matter how you do it, what's important is that you work out your core on a regular basis.
  3. Stretch, Stretch and Stretch Some More! - Nobody likes to stretch. I think most people see it as a waste of time. Well, if you want to learn how to windmill you're going to need some flexibility in your legs! So you need to stretch. Like the guy in the video says, make sure to stretch out your groin. The further apart you can get your legs the better your windmills will look!

Believe it or not! I used to do all that stuff when I was a kid but I probably would have to go to the emergency room if I tried it now!

Awesome! It's a lot of fun. You bring up a good point, though. It's a really good idea to train safely when you're practicing windmills!
